BENNINGTON – The Banner’s annual back-to-school backpack contest will hold a day due to the weather, moving the event to Tuesday instead.
“As a precaution, we have decided to postpone the backpacking event until Tuesday. We apologize for the short notice, but we prefer prevention than cure,” said Susan Plaisance, publicity manager and organizer of the event. She consulted with the Bennington Police Department before making the decision.
The event will take place Tuesday (weather permitting) from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Bennington Auto Mall on Performance Drive; The Auto Mall is a main sponsor of the event, which aims to ease the financial burden on families a bit during the back-to-school period.
This will be the fifth year of the event. Attendees can expect padded backpacks, YMCA kids’ games, hot dogs with Hannaford staff, Abbey Group snacks, UCS pencils and rules, Clip Shop gift certificates and more.
Approximately 250 padded backpacks will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, so parents in need are strongly encouraged to arrive at 2:30 p.m. to receive one per student.
Other event sponsors and contributors include: Bennington Fire Department & Bennington Rescue Team, Mission City Church, Green Mountain Concessions, Shires Housing, UCS / Big Brothers-Big Sister , EZ Way Rental, Staples, SVSU and the Bennington Police Department.
