Two Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, events this week aim to share a cultural tradition and help the community of Redlands honor loved ones who have passed away.

At an event hosted by AK Smiley Public Library on Monday, November 1 at the Contemporary Club, local groups created ofrendas, or altars, and visitors were encouraged to leave notes for those they lost. The celebration also included presentations on the meaning, history and art of tradition.

On Saturday 6 November, Asistencia de Redlands Conservancy will hold its first Dia de los Muertos celebration from 2pm to 9pm. The festivities will include music, food, games and ofrendas hosted by community members.

“This event will be a moment of healing for the loss of our loved ones last year,” wrote Enedelia Castillo, Asistencia volunteer and event organizer, in a press release. “It’s a gift for this community.

General admission to the Asistencia event is a suggested donation of $ 5 per person. To make an ofrenda, contact Executive Director Heather Ross at 909-372-0855 or [email protected] The conservancy will provide a table and a tablecloth for $ 50 per table.
