Quad Cities Customers Shop “Dam” on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – The One Quad Cities shopping event aimed at keeping shoppers local, is back in its sixth year this Black Friday.

That Dam Shopping Trip brings together five businesses from downtown Rock Island and five businesses from downtown Davenport for a two-day tour.

Participating shoppers have a marked stamp book in each of the 10 stores. Those who fill out their stamp book will have a chance to win $ 1,000 in gift certificates, $ 100 in each store.

The event organizer and owner of Skeleton Key Art and Antiques hopes the event will bring people right to the door for their holiday shopping.

“Even though people stop and walk around the store and don’t buy everything today,” Brandy Vandewalle said. “I think it’s a wonderful way to introduce people to some of the options that are here in the downtown areas of our Quad Cities.”

Big box stores and small local stores have been hit by supply chain issues. According to the owner of Theo & Co. in downtown Davenport, local shopping might be your best bet this holiday season.

“Supporting the locals right now is actually the best way to do it, to make sure you can get your Christmas presents on time,” said Anne Stopulos. “We got it here. If we don’t have it here, we will definitely be able to find out [whether] we can do it for you or not.

The pandemic has left many small businesses struggling. The owner of Taste Buds in downtown Rock Island said these kinds of events bring the community together.

“It was nice to see everyone again and do some local shopping,” said Lisa Forgie. “It’s great because it gives us all the shots we need, after the year we’ve had. It’s great that we are all working together.”

A customer visiting for Thanksgiving said it was worth keeping her local money.

“Just the fact that it’s a local store makes it so much better,” said Susan Rundle. “You can find things that you can’t find online. The quality is generally always better.

Buyers can pick up Stamp Books at any of the 10 stores and complete the event in any order they want. The event continues Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The full list of participating companies is available on the event’s Facebook page.
