Cycling, soccer and hockey took to the streets and grounds of the city during Calgary’s Heritage Day long weekend.
The Tour de Bowness, Play On and Calgary Minor Soccer Association Calgary Cup attracted athletes from across the country.
And although the weekend started with residents worrying about parking for the Play On event, thousands of Calgarians visited Marda Loop, Bowness and surrounding communities to watch the sporting events.
Kim Kerr, Competitive Events Organizer for the CMSA Calgary Cup, called their weekend of soccer a great weekend of team building and building friendships.
“We have a team here that came from Montreal. They made friends and they even asked a family from the other team they were playing with to bring them homemade cookies,” she said.
“We see that across the board, teams are cheering each other on and presenting medals, with teams congratulating the other teams who have won gold, silver and bronze.”
Kerr said she hopes the positive experience of competing in Calgary will translate into future interest next year.
“Hopefully the Montreal and Winnipeg teams will all want to come back and bring more teams here,” she said.
