MANILA, Philippines — Alexa Milliam beat a 4-2, 5-4(4) knockdown over second seed Jufe-Ann Cocoy while Therese Gauran, Louraine Jallorina and Renante Bravo also walked away with straight-set wins to maintain their title run at the PPS-PEPP National Age Group Tennis Tournament in Bacolod City last Friday.
Milliam showed the form that won him the 18-and-under crown at last week’s PPS-PEPP Iloilo stage, overpowering three rivals before the unranked local bet subdued Cocoy in the first leg final age category on the courts of the Negros Occidental Tennis Association.
Gauran, of Tayasan, Negros, lived up to her tally, dropping just two games in four games to dominate the 16-and-under girls’ game for the second week in a row. She beat No. 2 Louchelaj Estember, 4-0, 4-2, in the Group 1 tournament final which drew players from Aklan, Roxas, Iloilo, Tayasan, Dumaguete, Valencia, San Carlos, La Carlota, Cadiz, Sagay and Bacolod.
Unseeded Jallorina also turned the odds around, toppling third seed Zeannie Brigoli, 4-0, 4-0, Fiel Caroliean, 4-1, 4-0, and Bea Celeste, 4-1, 4-1, before dominating Raine Villame, 4-1, 4-0, to claim the 12-under crown.
Hannah Divinagracia joined the game of little lights, beating three rivals before beating Jasmine Jaran, 4-2, 4-1, to pocket the 16-year-old plum in the event hosted by Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express President and CEO Bobby Castro and sponsored by Fernando Arguelles III.
Meanwhile, the PPS-PEPP La Carlota stage scheduled for this week has been moved to May 11-15 due to unfavorable weather conditions. For more details, contact event organizer Bobby Mangunay on 0915-4046464.
