In a big political twist, former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh backed Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) general secretary Bikram Singh Majithia after the latter was convicted in a drug case by the government of Congress. In a fairly significant development ahead of the Punjab elections, Shiromani Akali Dal’s secretary general and lawmaker Bikram Singh Majithia was sentenced on Monday for a drug case. An FIR was registered against him at the State Criminal Police Station of the Mohali Bureau of Investigation, based on a report submitted by the Special Working Group headed by IGP Harpreet Singh Sidhu, under Articles 25 , 27A and 29 of the NDPS law. . The action against the SAD leadership comes at a time when Punjabi congressman Navjot Sidhu was pressuring the government led by Charanjit Singh Channi to crack the whip against the drug mafia.
Speaking to Twitter, Navjot Sidhu called the move a “slap” in the face of all the powerful people who have slept on the issue for years. It was seen as a search of former Punjab captain CM Amarinder Singh.

Meanwhile, SAD Patriarch Parkash Singh Badal called it a “policy of revenge” and predicted that the government will have to bear the brunt of this action. Majithia is the brother-in-law of SAD CM candidate Sukhbir Singh Badal.
The Punjab is expected to elect its new representatives to the Assembly in 2022.
