A murder-suicide left a three-year-old girl without parents and her grandparents rushed to her aid. Now a group from Bakersfield High School have come together to give the child over 30 gifts to comfort her on this tragic holiday season.
A dozen students and staff at BHS collected 30 gifts for three-year-old Penelope. They presented the gifts to her grandmother just days before Christmas.
December began with a tragedy that left a three-year-old girl, Penelope, without a parent. A murder-suicide has left both Rejina Terriquez and her husband Arsenio Rubio dead.
It happened a few weeks before Christmas, a group of students and staff from BHS came together to cheer on Penelope.
“We wanted to do what we could and give back to them,” said Stephanie Stone, the event’s organizer. “We want to change the dynamic here and be a little more involved in the community when they need it to be able to scale up. We may not be able to help everyone, but if we can help one person, we will try to do it as best we can. “
More than 30 gifts were given to Penelope. Soccer players, cheerleaders and the school mascot gave the gifts to Penelope’s grandmother, Ana Terriquez.
“We don’t matter, but my granddaughter does,” Ana Terriquez said. “She has had a drastic and ugly change in her life as now she will be spending Christmas without her mom and dad.”
The gifts were a mix of toys, books, and clothing. Terriquez said she was extremely grateful for all the gifts.
“I want to thank everyone who took the time to bring a gift for my granddaughter, I don’t know how to thank them and I think I will be grateful until the day I die,” Terriquez said.
Terriquez said no one had stopped helping them since the day of the tragedy.
